The best premium defenders in FPL

This premium defender spot is one you don’t ideally want to change around much in FPL.

Having a solid ‘glue’ pick who you can play pretty much every game is the ideal scenario. A glue pick is a player you select for all, or most, of the entire season.

While many FPL managers are looking to save money in defence this season, there is still a strong argument for investing in premium defenders.

The best defenders don't just deliver clean sheets. They offer multiple routes to points through goals, assists, bonus points and defensive contributions, providing the consistency that's so valuable over a 38 game season.

If you're planning to spend big at the back, these are the five defenders I'd be targeting from Gameweek 1.

Gabriel (£8.0m) - Arsenal

It's difficult to argue against Gabriel as the standout premium defender in FPL, even at his ultra premium price.

Arsenal continue to boast the league's strongest defence, ranking the best for goals conceded and expected goals conceded (xGC). That alone gives Gabriel an incredibly high points floor.

However, what separates him from most centre-backs is his attacking threat.

Gabriel has become one of the Premier League's most dangerous defenders from set-pieces, consistently finding himself on the end of corners and free-kicks.

Arsenal's dominance often allows him to collect bonus points whenever they keep a clean sheet too.

He finished last season with 30 bonus points - first among defenders - 11 more than second-placed Adrien Truffert.

His defensive contributions are another major plus, as he gained an extra two points on 11 occasions, which was surprising since Arsenal dominate so much of the ball.

Gabriel regularly records high numbers of clearances, blocks and interceptions, giving him yet another route to points.

Another big plus for him is he is the only real fit and nailed Arsenal defender right now.

Virgil van Dijk (£6.5m) - Liverpool

Van Dijk finished as the third highest-scoring defender (175 points) despite Liverpool's dire season.

The Reds' captain remains one of the most reliable defenders in FPL thanks to his security of starts, attacking threat and defensive contributions.

His set-piece threat remains a huge weapon.

Van Dijk consistently ranks among the league leaders for headed chances and he actually scored the most goals (six) among defenders last season.

He was also great for defensive contributions, hitting the threshold 15 times, which gained him a massive 30 points.

Liverpool conceded the eighth most goals (53) but also had the second best xGC (47.45) and although they were poor, they were also a bit unfortunate.

It's hard to see them being that bad at the back again, so even a slight improvement in defence means the Dutchman should do well again.

Liverpool also start with some favourable fixtures, as they play Nottingham Forest (H), Ipswich (A) and Fulham (H) in their first four.

Nico O'Reilly (£6.5m) - Manchester City

O'Reilly had a fantastic season scoring five goals and four assists.

He is now arguably the most explosive defender in the game - especially if he plays in midfield like he did for previous manager Pep Guardiola on a number of occasions.

Although naturally a midfielder, O'Reilly has flourished in an advanced full-back role, allowing him to combine Manchester City's clean-sheet potential with genuine attacking upside.

His willingness to drive forward, arrive in the box and create chances makes him feel almost like an additional midfielder in FPL.

City should rank as one of the best defensive sides looking at their team, so O'Reilly has both an excellent floor and a very high ceiling.

If he secures a regular starting role under Enzo Maresca, which he should, he could comfortably finish among the highest-scoring defenders in the game.

He is the type of player you can comfortably play even in the tougher fixtures but City also have some really kind home games in the first 10.

They welcome Bournemouth (H), Coventry (H), Sunderland (H), Ipswich (H) and Brighton (H).

James Tarkowski (£6.0m) - Everton

Tarkowski may not possess the attacking flair of some others on this list but few defenders offer his consistency.

Everton remain one of the Premier League's most organised defensive sides and Tarkowski rarely misses a minute.

His biggest strength from an FPL perspective is the number of ways he can score points.

He's a threat from set-pieces and consistently ranks among the league leaders for clearances, blocks and interceptions, which means he benefits from defensive contribution points.

Tarkowski hit the threshold 22 times last season, scored two goals and three assists with 11 clean sheets.

Even when Everton concede, Tarkowski often walks away with a respectable score.

Marc Guehi (£6.0m) - Manchester City

Guehi could prove to be one of the standout premium defenders in FPL this season.

City moved quickly to sign the England international in January and he has since established himself as a key part of their defence.

He was a mainstay in the City back line and finished the season as the second highest- scoring defender (179 points). He also managed three goals and five assists for good measure.

Guehi regularly posts good numbers for clearances, interceptions and blocks, making him well placed to benefit from the defensive contribution scoring system.

The England international hit his defensive contribution points in 11 matches.

While he may not carry the same explosive attacking threat as teammate O'Reilly, his consistency means he can quietly deliver on a regular basis - and he is £0.5m cheaper.

If City produce the defensive numbers many expect this season, Guehi has every chance of finishing among the highest scoring defenders again.
