Best FPL mid-priced defenders 2026/27

The mid-priced Fantasy Premier League defenders present us with some great options every season - the key is to identify them early.

Over the last few years, the emergence of wing-backs has given more importance to the defender slot in FPL.

The best defenders in the game are those with not only clean sheet potential but also a plethora of attacking threat.

And now we also have another factor to consider with the addition of defensive contributions. For defenders, these consist of clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles.

If a defender reaches 10 defensive contributions in a single match, they gain an extra two points.

Here are our top selections:

Cristhian Mosquera (£5.5m) - Arsenal

Mosquera has quickly become one of the most popular defenders in FPL and it's easy to see why.

Priced significantly lower than Arsenal's premium defensive assets, Mosquera offers a cheap route into what is widely expected to be the league's best defence once again.

The biggest attraction is Arsenal themselves.

Mikel Arteta's side consistently rank among the Premier League leaders for clean sheets and expected goals conceded (xGC).

Mosquera should be nailed to start in William Saliba's absence, who is expected to be out for a while.

The only slight concern is long-term security of starts.

While he's expected to begin the campaign in the starting 11, Arsenal possess excellent defensive depth, so monitoring pre-season and any signings Arsenal make would be wise.

If he keeps his place however, he could prove to be one of the bargains of the season and could well be good for defensive contributions too.

Josko Gvardiol (£5.5m) - Manchester City

Gvardiol remains one of the highest-upside defenders in FPL.

Manchester City should finish in the top five for defence at least this season but what separates Gvardiol from many other defenders is his attacking involvement.

He managed two goals and two assists last season and nine in the previous two before that.

Whether underlapping into central areas or arriving at the back post from set-pieces, the Croatian regularly finds himself in goalscoring positions.

He just looks great value at this price, as he is likely to be one of the most nailed defenders for his side and also offers some attacking threat too.

He also drew praise from new manager Enzo Maresca, which bodes well for him, as Pep Guardiola's successor mentioned Gvardiol as one of three 'central pillars' to his side.

City also have some really nice fixtures to start the season - their first five home games are against Bournemouth, Coventry, Sunderland, Ipswich and Brighton.

Neco Williams (£5.0m) - Nottingham Forest

Williams quietly enjoyed an excellent campaign last time, as he picked up two goals and three assists while starting 36 games.

Oliver Glasner has been experimenting in pre-season with the back-three system that served him well at Crystal Palace.

This would give both Forest's full-backs the opportunity to operate as wing-backs rather than conventional full-backs which should mean more attacking returns.

Forest also have some good fixtures, as they play Leeds (H), Spurs (H), Coventry (H) and Ipswich (A) in their first eight.

Williams may also do reasonably for defensive contributions in his new role.

At his price, he represents excellent value for managers looking to avoid spending too heavily at the back.

Pedro Porro (£5.5m) - Spurs

Few defenders possess Pedro Porro's attacking ceiling.

The Spaniard effectively operates as an additional winger whenever Tottenham attack, constantly delivering crosses, creating chances and taking shots from dangerous positions.

This season, there is even greater optimism surrounding Spurs' defence.

After significant investment across the back line, they should be far more difficult to break down than they were last year.

If those improvements translate into more clean sheets, Porro's attacking potential suddenly becomes even more valuable.

He is one of the few attacking full-backs who is also good for defensive contributions - he hit the threshold nine times last season while also netting one goal and assisting three.

Spurs also start the season with some kind fixtures, as they take on Newcastle (H), Everton (H), Aston Villa (H), Coventry (H), Palace (H) and Ipswich (H) during their first 11.

Keep an eye on pre-season games though, as with Spain winning the World Cup, he could be a risk for Gameweek 1.

Dan Ballard (£5.0m) - Sunderland

Ballard could be one of the most overlooked defenders in FPL this season.

The Sunderland centre-back enjoyed an excellent debut Premier League season, scoring two goals, keeping eight clean sheets and quickly establishing himself as one of the Black Cats' defensive leaders.

He also hit the defensive contributions threshold 12 times in only 29 starts.

From an FPL perspective, Ballard offers several routes to points.

He's a major threat from set-pieces. Last season, he was among the league's leading defenders for big chances, with his aerial ability making him a constant danger from corners and free-kicks.

He registered the third most big chances (eight) among defenders.

Ballard consistently ranks highly for clearances, blocks and interceptions, so he should get plenty of defensive contribution points again.

Sunderland have some really good fixtures to start the season. They play Ipswich (A), Fulham (H), Brighton (H), Leeds (H) and Coventry (A) in their first nine.

If you're looking for a reliable defender with secure minutes, goal threat and defensive contribution upside, Ballard deserves to be firmly in the conversation.

Few defenders in his price bracket offer as many different routes to FPL points.

Best FPL mid-priced defenders: Ones to watch

Luka Vuskovic could be one of the most exciting defensive differentials in FPL this season at £5.0m.

The 19-year-old Croatian arrives at Brighton with a glowing reputation after a superb loan spell at Hamburg where he scored six goals in 28 appearances.

He also could be great for defensive contributions - he averaged about 12 per 90 minutes for Hamburg last season.

Tarik Muharemovic is another defender who could quickly become a bargain at £5.0m.

Leeds signed the Bosnian international after an impressive campaign with Sassuolo in Serie A, where he scored two goals and two assists.

His performances earned him a place in Bosnia and Herzegovina's World Cup squad.

The 23-year-old is another one who could do well for defensive contributions, averaging 11 per 90 last season.
