Best FPL £4.5m defenders 2026/27

Value defenders are always the backbone of a well-balanced FPL squad.

This season, there are several £4.5m gems who could provide steady points while freeing up cash for big hitters in midfield and attack.

But many of those who are expected to be regular defensive contribution point providers have been priced higher this season in recognition of their potential, making it trickier to find a good budget gem.

Here are our top selections:

Ola Aina (£4.5m) - Nottingham Forest

Aina could become one of the strongest longer-term options.

Oliver Glasner has been experimenting in pre-season with the back-three system that served him so well at Crystal Palace.

Should Forest continue with that formation, Aina would have the opportunity to operate as a wing-back rather than a conventional full-back.

That would immediately enhance his attacking potential. He has already registered an assist during pre-season, so is one to monitor.

He only hit his defensive contribution threshold twice but maybe under a new manager that improves as well as his attacking output.

The main issue is Forest’s schedule. Matches against Liverpool (A), Tottenham (H) and Aston Villa (A) arrive within the opening four gameweeks, making Aina difficult to start confidently from the beginning.

He may therefore be better viewed as a rotation option.

At £4.5m though, he offers an affordable route into a potentially productive wing-back role and comes in cheaper than the other established members of the Forest defence.

Antonee Robinson (£4.5m) - Fulham

Robinson is arguably the biggest risk on this list but he may also possess one of the highest ceilings.

The Fulham left-back managed only 17 league starts last season, while Ryan Sessegnon represents genuine competition for his position. A change of manager adds another layer of uncertainty.

There is nevertheless plenty to like if Robinson establishes himself as the first-choice left-back again.

He managed 10 assists in the 2024/25 season, comfortably the best attacking stats among the defenders featured here.

He also averaged eight defensive contributions per 90 minutes, putting him within reach of the threshold more regularly than most attacking full-backs.

The most intriguing development concerns penalties.

Robinson converted a spot-kick in Gameweek 37 last season and with Raul Jimenez no longer at the club, there is a chance he gains spot-kick duties, which would be massive from an FPL perspective.

A full-back offering creativity, some defensive contribution potential and even a route to penalties is difficult to ignore at £4.5m.

Fulham don't have the easiest fixtures to start but they do play Crystal Palace (H), Ipswich (A), Hull (H) and Coventry (A) during the first eight.

The upside is big if he turns out to be nailed.

Michael Kayode (£4.5m)/Kristoffer Ajer (£4.5m) - Brentford

Kayode may not have the glamour of some of the other names on this list but he has several qualities that make him a very useful FPL selection.

The Brentford right-back started 37 league games last season, picking up a goal and two assists. He was often on long throw-ins, firing balls into dangerous areas.

Kayode only hit the defensive contribution threshold three times last season but he does provide security of minutes and still represents good value at £4.5m in a decent Brentford side.

Kristoffer Ajer could actually be the one to start the season though, seeing as Sepp van den Berg (£5.0m) is reportedly set to be out for a few months.

His defensive contribution rate is very impressive with a 50% hit rate but at 70% when playing as a centre-back in a back four.

Their opening schedule is mixed but rotating them could work and if Ajer is the one you go for, then you could profit from plenty of defensive contribution points.

Luke Shaw (£4.5m) - Manchester United

Shaw is unlikely to become an attacking phenomenon or a defensive contribution magnet but he could be the best early season selection at this price.

After years of injury concerns, he started all 38 Premier League matches last season. He produced 113 FPL points, with one goal, one assist and 10 clean sheets.

United’s additions of Youri Tielemans (£6.0m) and Andrey Santos (£5.0m) could also provide greater protection in front of the defence, which would mean more clean sheets.

Most importantly, the opening fixtures are fantastic.

United come up against Hull (A) and Ipswich (H) in the first two gameweeks, making Shaw an inexpensive route into a defence that should provide a lot of value.

The fixtures are great early on and if United improve defensively then he could well be a good long-term pick too.

Matty Cash (£4.5m) - Aston Villa

Cash offers the combination of attacking threat and secure minutes.

The Villa right-back scored three goals and assisted three last season.

Cash won't get many defensive contribution points but he does have other routes to points.

Villa also begin with difficult matches against Brighton (A) and Arsenal (H) but during the next seven play Hull (A), Nottingham Forest (H), Brentford (H) and Fulham (H).

The Polish international should remain a regular starter under Unai Emery and he does look like one of the better value £4.5m defenders.

Best FPL £4.5m defenders 2026/27: Other notable options

Vitalii Mykolenko is one of the safer options available at this price.

Everton’s centre-backs are particularly well suited to the defensive contribution scoring system but their full-backs do not offer the same potential.

Mykolenko started 33 league matches last season but produced only one assist and reached the defensive-contribution threshold seven times.

Ferdi Kadioglu started 34 league matches and the left-back and did pick up some attacking returns.

His total of one goal and two assists was slightly disappointing considering he registered an expected goals (xG) of 2.03 and an expected assists (xA) of 3.33 but there is scope for those attacking returns to improve.

Joe Rodon is probably one of the best defenders at his price for defensive contribution potential. He hit the threshold nine times last season but Leeds's defence did finish in the bottom five for xGC.

He's a good option if you can rotate him for his plum fixtures.

Meanwhile, Tyrick Mitchell is a full £1.0m cheaper than fellow wing-back Daniel Munoz and racked up just one fewer point (135).
