FPL Assistant Manager chip: Everything you need to know

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has released more details about the new Assistant Manager chip – formerly known as the Mystery Chip.

What is the Assistant Manager chip?

While FPL involves picking a squad of 15 players, the Assistant Manager chip will additionally see us select one of the Premier League’s 20 managers to score points.

For three successive gameweeks once the chip is activated, your chosen manager will score points based on whether their team wins, draws and keeps a clean sheet, as well as goals scored.

How does the Assistant Manager scoring system work?

The Assistant Manager chip will earn points based on their respective teams’ results as follows:

• Team win: +6
• Team draw:+3
• Goal scored: +1
• Clean sheet: +2

Things get a little bit more complicated than that however.

If your chosen manager faces a club at least five places higher in the Premier League table at the start of the gameweek, you’ll earn an extra 10 points for a win and an additional five points for a draw.

You therefore have a choice between opting for a manager from a top team, with potentially more opportunities for goals and wins.

Or you could opt for a higher-risk choice to maximise the potential points.

When will the new chip become available?

The chip will be playable from Gameweek 24.

How much will the Assistant Managers cost?

Each Assistant Manager has a set price that will not change throughout the season.

They range from £0.5m and £1.5m.

They will have to be accommodated within your existing FPL squad budget, so your choice of manager could affect the quality of players you own.

It’s further complicated by the fact the Assistant Manager will count in the three-per-club limit. So if you own Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez, Arne Slot will be off the menu.

Mikel Arteta, Enzo Maresca, Arne Slot, Pep Guardiola and Eddie Howe come in at the top £1.5m price.

Everton did not have a new manager at the time the price list was revealed but David Moyes will be among those on £0.5m.

Can you use other chips at the same time as the Assistant Manager?

You can only play one chip in a single gameweek and this applies to the Assistant Manager too.

For the three gameweeks it is active, no other chips can be used.

Can you change your Assistant Manager?

If you want to change your manager during this three-gameweek period, it will cost a transfer in exactly the same way as players.

But the first time you select an assistant upon activating the chip, it will not count as one of your free transfers.

Are there any examples of how managers would have fared so far?

FPL provided the following information about Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola. They said:

“AFC Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola has been the main beneficiary of the table-bonus element so far this season.
“He sits in second place in the current 2024/25 manager standings, having overseen victories over higher-ranked opponents such as Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.”

In a table of managers released by FPL, Iraola has managed the largest three-gameweek score to date, with 47 points.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Russell Martin has performed worst, with just 30 points over the season and a best three-gameweek score of 12.

How will this affect our FPL strategy?

We will publish more analysis before the chip goes live.

There will be plenty to think about. FPL for example has outlined that it could offer an alternative approach to chip strategy in double gameweeks.

The Assistant Manager could earn points from four matches in a three-gameweek spell, assuming there is one double when it is activated.
