How to win at FPL: Taking points hits

“Hits never pay off.”

“Taking hits in FPL is never a good idea.”

There are plenty of managers who preach these rules, but we couldn’t disagree more.

Hits are a vital weapon in an FPL manager’s armoury.

In this section, we’ll be giving seven tips for taking successful hits in FPL.

Setting yourself up for blank and double gameweeks

Ideally you’ll be able to plan ahead so that you keep hits to a minimum, but acquiring double gameweek assets in exchange for a hit can often be a wise investment.

Remember, though, that a double gameweek player might not get two full matches. If you're taking a hit to bring them in, he should be worth keeping after the double gameweek too.

Equally, when a blank gameweek is on the horizon, there may be times when you’re struggling to field 11 players. It’s often worth taking a hit in this situation too.

Analyse your expected FPL return

It sounds obvious, but a general rule of thumb is that you should only take a four-point hit if you are confident that the player you’re bringing in will outscore the outgoing player by at least four points.

The key point here is that your hit doesn’t need to pay off immediately.

If you think it will pay off over the next few weeks, it could well be worth it. It’s also key to analyse the player you are removing, and not just the player you’re bringing in.
