Best Manchester City players 2024/25: Gameweek 1 uncertainties
A number of first-team regulars were involved in the final of Euro 2024 and are doubts to be ready for Gameweek 1.
Pep Guardiola addressed this issue earlier in pre-season, indicating these players would not play in the Community Shield match ahead of the first game of the season.
Instead, Guardiola said players would be reintroduced as late as Gameweek 2, when City face Ipswich.
Kyle Walker, Phil Foden, Rodri and John Stones played in the Euros final and are unlikely to make Gameweek 1. Kevin De Bruyne and others who were eliminated earlier and are in contention to start.
Speaking on Friday (August 9) ahead of the Community Shield, Guardiola said English and Spanish players would return to training next week, underlining their likelihood to miss Gameweek 1.
Best Manchester City players FPL 2024/25: Erling Haaland (£15.0m)
Haaland didn’t reach the 36 goal highs of his debut season but he still ended the 2023/24 campaign with the Golden Boot.
He scored 27 goals and added eight assists over 31 appearances, scoring 217 FPL points (fifth).
The Norwegian was in another class when it came to expected goals (xG), with his tally of 29.57 nearly nine ahead of Mohamed Salah in second.
He had more shots on goal than any other player (121), the most shots on target (59) and was the only one to have more than 100 attempts inside the box.
Fifty five big chances came is way, 15 more than Alexander Isak, demonstrating there was plenty of room for improvement on an already league-leading goals total.
Haaland is a focal point of the City attack, topping the charts among all players in the game for expected goal involvement (xGI) while on the pitch (47%).
No one had a better expected points tally (213.66), despite four other players beating his actual total.
His record price tag of £15.0m has dividing the community, with some looking elsewhere for value.
But his ownership is creeping up and he is in just over 42% of teams at the time of writing.
Hub AI expects a close contest between him and Salah over the first five gameweeks of the season. Salah currently has the slight edge – 38 versus 37.2 – and his £2.5m has our AI team favouring the Egyptian.
But with a full pre-season behind him – apart from an injury scare before starting the next friendly – Haaland should be ready to go from the start, unlike many of his teammates.
The City striker has scored five times in pre-season, including a hat-trick against Gameweek 1 opponents Chelsea.
Best Manchester City FPL players 2024/25: Josko Gvardiol (£6.0m)
Gvardiol had a sensational end to the season, scoring four goals and assisting two in seven games.
Operating effectively as a left-winger, the Croatian defender racked up 68 points in that time, joint-most alongside Jean-Philippe Mateta.
While such form might only end up being a purple patch, Gvardiol offers attacking threat if he retains the same role this season.
There is a chance he could play centre-back early on while players return to fitness after international duty, however City always have strong clean sheet potential.
City players are always vulnerable to rotation but as things stand, Gvardiol could be one of the more nailed starters in their defence.
Hub AI ranks him as the best defender in the game over the first four gameweeks, marginally ahead of Liverpool’s full-backs who have one of the best fixture runs.
Best Manchester City FPL players 2024/25: Kevin De Bruyne (£9.5m)
Our third City pick would have been Foden, had he not been a doubt to start Gameweek 1.
The England international scored 19 and assisted eight last season, ending with the second highest FPL points (230).
He is now an integral part of the City lineup, playing 35 games and the second most minutes behind Rodri.
But for Gameweek 1, De Bruyne is a placeholder ahead of Foden’s return.
The Belgian playmaker was limited to 18 appearances last season because of injury but he still recorded 10 assists and four goals.
He created 21 big chances, seven more than Bernardo Silva in half the minutes.
FPL managers may look elsewhere for the first few gameweeks, however Hub AI ranks De Bruyne among the best midfielders for the first five gameweeks (sixth).
Those looking for a short-term City pick could opt for Oscar Bobb. The £5.0m midfielder has performed well in pre-season, scoring two and assisting three. He is set to start the season with vacancies in the starting 11.
