Best Liverpool FPL players 2026/27: Florian Wirtz (£7.5m)

Wirtz has come in at a lower FPL this time around than the season prior, and with a full Premier League season now under his belt, as well as a new manager at the helm, could the German make a mockery of his £7.5m valuation?

Based on what we have seen from Wirtz during Liverpool’s pre-season, the answer looks to be a resounding yes, although time will tell whether the former Bayer Leverkusen man can translate this form to the Premier League.

The 23-year-old managed nine attacking returns in 27 starts last season amid a chaotic campaign for the Reds, but there is reason to believe he could substantially improve upon the five goals he scored last season.

So far under Andoni Iraola, Wirtz has played just off Alexander Isak in roughly a 4-2-3-1 formation for Liverpool, but his actual position suggests we could end up describing the Reds’ shape as more of a 4-4-2 or 4-2-2-2, such is Wirtz’s involvement in the opposition box

The German is taking up positions in advance of Isak at times, and the two are operating almost like a strike partnership, with a very clear positional distinction between the attacking duo and the rest of the team.

With set-pieces also a big part of his appeal, Wirtz should have enough routes to points to substantially improve upon his tally from last season – and the Reds’ favourable early fixtures could make him a popular early selection.

Best Liverpool FPL players 2026/27: Alexander Isak (£9.0m)

As mentioned prior, Liverpool’s early season fixtures perhaps hold more appeal than first glance suggests – particularly from an attacking perspective.

Of the six sides faces by Iraola’s side to open the season, five have brand new managers, and the other game is against newly promoted Ipswich.

That run begins with a Gameweek 1 trip to Newcastle, who have parted ways with Eddie Howe, and there is an opportunity for Isak to get one over on his old club early doors.

That former club factor takes the edge off of a potentially tough away match-up for the Swedish striker, who will come up against Nottingham Forest and Fulham in his first two Anfield appearances of the season.

There are goals on the table here, and with Hugo Ekitike out with a long-term injury, Isak will be the absolute focal point for an Iraola side that is cautiously being predicted to prioritise chance creation over defensive stability.

Isak has a chance of being on penalties, although it remains to be seen whether Dominik Szoboszlai will take up that mantle, but from open play alone Isak has one of the league’s highest ceilings, and unlike last season there are very few barriers to his Anfield success.

Although his price is still a premium £9.0m, it’s a substantial drop from the £10.5m price tag the Sweden international received last season, where he played less than 700 minutes for the Reds – now Isak has the chance to kick on and leave his fitness issues behind him.

Best Liverpool FPL players 2026/27: Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m)

Szoboszlai is by far the most popular asset on this list at the time of writing, with the Hungarian selected by almost half of FPL teams a week before the season kicks off.

While his price makes Szoboszlai a more affordable selection than the likes of Isak and Wirtz who both stand at under 15% ownership, the 25-year-old is far more than just a budget-friendly pick.

Arguably the league’s best free-kick taker, set-pieces represent a huge part of Szoboszlai’s appeal, with the Hungary international racking up six goals and seven assists from a combination of open play ingenuity and dead ball situations.

An accomplished long distance shooter, Szoboszlai has the ability to conjure a goal or assist from nothing, and his quality perhaps allows FPL managers to overlook the fact he is deployed in a slightly deeper position than some of the midfield alternatives.

It looks as if Wirtz will be first choice in terms of the player closest to Isak on the teamsheet, but Szoboszlai is not afraid to make box-crashing runs from his starting position in midfield, and is often the player the second ball falls to on the edge of the penalty box when the Reds are pushing for a goal.

On the topic of penalties, Szoboszlai is just about the favourite to take a spot kick should the Reds be awarded one early doors – but Isak will likely have a strong claim too, with the striker surely keen to boost his goalscoring numbers wherever possible this season.

Regardless, Szoboszlai’s reliable minutes and various routes to points make him one of the strongest options in his price range given he is available for a reasonable £7.0m – there is even a shout of defensive contribution points for the all-action Hungarian, who will be well backed to hit double figures for attacking returns once again.

While there are honourable mentions for the likes of Virgil van Dijk who could excel for defensive contributions as Marcos Senesi did under Iraola, and Milos Kerkez who is linking up with his old boss, the initial read of Liverpool under Iraola is one that suggests higher upside for attacking assets like Szoboszlai – clean sheets don’t appear to be a huge priority initially for the Spaniard as he looks to imprint his attacking style at Anfield.

The departure of Ibrahima Konate also means that the Reds will also need to integrate a new centre-back alongside their Dutch skipper, with Ronald Araujo looking likely to step in, and with their early fixtures favouring goals more than clean sheets, it feels like a safer call to pick attackers from Iraola’s side rather than backing Liverpool defenders heading into Gameweek 1.
